Old stable in Camden market

In the 19th century, Camden was an industrial site with many distilleries. The next century, it was a hub for goods from the British Empire. Camden was situated near to Regent’s Canal and King’s Cross railway station. To transport goods in the warehouse of Camden, there were many horses. The horse’s work was hard and some horse had to rest. So, a horse hospital was built to nurse tired horses in the market. There was also a lot of stables because more than 800 horses worked in the Market in 1939.

All this horse stables and hospitals are now shops or restaurants. When we entered in the market, on the right, we saw a little place to go in the old stables. In the place, a frieze shows horse and works in the 19th century. This frieze is in bronze and makes an arc of a circle around the place. It shows horses which transport goods and people who work in boilerworks.

In the old stables, different clothes shops show their goods in stables or in front of it. Each of the boxes was composed of an arch, a door and a wall with railing. Wood is very present in the ground and on the walls. The beige parquet highlights walls and different goods. The walls were differents, a dark wood is used with a black metal. Archs are around the doors. All this elements give a rustic architecture with old stables.
