British Museum

The British Museum was built in 1759. At the beginning, there were just 80 000 objects and its collection has increased to seven million. The building extended until 2000. At this time, a large courtyard had been built with a glass roof at the top. It cost 100 million pounds sterling and it was the biggest courtyard in Europe with 17 000 squares metres. It was composed of glass triangle surrounded by metal. These triangles were organised in discs which gave a feeling of a great size and height. This work is a beautiful sculpture which bring a modernity in and outside the museum.

The other side of the building was an old structure with a lot of stone. At the entrance, there are a lot of impressive columns. The two rows of columns in front of the entrance impose respect and show strength. The pediment at the top of the building and the columns were commons feature of Greek architecture. The Museum was composed of block of stone piled.

In the large courtyard, four entrance were situated in middle of walls. Each entrance had Greek architecture with four columns and the pediment. They were forward of the wall. The walls are simple with some windows to light the museum.

The mix of architecture between the stone and the glass roof gives a beautiful style. It highlights the stone and Greek architecture. In the courtyard, we can eat in different restaurant in a great space.
