It is a building situated in the south of London, in the district of Southwark near the Thames and the London Bridge, opposite the City of London. It is 306 metres high a skyscraper composed of steel, concrete and glass, designed by Renzo Piano. First, the Shard’s name was “the London Bridge Tower”, and then its actual name came from the critisms of the English Heritage that described the building as “A shard of glass through the heart of historic London”. It was inaugurated on July 5, 2012.
It was the highest building in the UK and European Union until the construction of the Tour Mercury City in Moscow. The construction lasted 4 years (2008-2012) and costed 1.8 billion to the Qatar. It replaced an old building built in 1976 and destroyed in 2008.
In the Shard, there are offices and luxury residences designed in neo-futurism and high-tech style. There are two floors reserved for the tourisms. Here, there is one of the most beautiful views of the British capital.
The Shard received the “Emporis Skyscraper Award 2013” for the most outstanding skyscraper of 2013.
